Chemical Peels Q & A

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are skin treatments that use a carefully formulated chemical solution to exfoliate the outer layers of your skin. As those outer layers peel off, many common skin complaints are also removed, and you’re left with a layer of fresh, new skin.

There are many different peels to choose from, in levels ranging from light to deep. During your visit, your practitioner checks your skin and reviews your health history to help you choose the best peel for your skin.

What can chemical peels do for my skin?

Chemical peels can improve the appearance of many common skin complaints, including:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Mild acne scarring
  • Sun damage
  • Areas of uneven pigmentation
  • General texture issues

Chemical peels can also be an effective treatment for certain types of acne.

What happens during a chemical peel?

Getting a chemical peel is similar to having a facial. The process begins with a thorough skin cleansing. Next, your practitioner applies the chemical solution in a thin layer. Depending on your specific needs, more than one type of peel can be applied to various areas.

After a period of time, the chemical solution is gently removed and a soothing cream or balm is applied.

What is the recovery process like after a chemical peel?

Your recovery process depends on the strength of your peel. A light peel might just create a few days of pink skin and minor tingling as your outer layers of skin peel off.

A medium or deep peel requires 7-14 days of peeling before the full results emerge. During the initial portion of the healing process, you’ll carefully cleanse your skin and apply a healing ointment. Your skin might peel off in small flakes or larger sheets.

You can expect your skin to be sensitive and appear more pink or red than normal in the days after your peel, but it will quickly return to normal as the healing process moves forward. With proper sun protection and skin care, you can extend the results of your peel for more than a year.
